Paying off your mortgage early isn't always a no-brainer. ![]() Even paying $20 or $50 extra each month can help you to pay down your mortgage faster. However, you don't have to pay that much to make an impact. Doing so can shave four to eight years off the life of your loan, as well as tens of thousands of dollars in interest. Over the course of the year, you will have paid the additional month. Instead of paying twice a week, you can achieve the same results by adding 1/12th of your mortgage payment to your monthly payment. ![]() There are 26 bi-weekly periods in the year, but making only two payments a month would result in 24 payments. Payments are made every two weeks, not just twice a month, which results in an extra mortgage payment each year. One of the most common ways that people pay extra toward their mortgages is to make bi-weekly mortgage payments. Even making small extra payments over time can shave years off your loan and save you thousands of dollars in interest, depending on the terms of your loan.Įarly Loan Repayment: A Little Goes a Long Way After all, what's the point? ![]() When it comes to background patterns, it’s best to keep things relatively simple. Site visitors would still get a beautiful pop of color, but wouldn’t be overwhelmed or distracted by the swirling colors in the middle. It could also be a good fit for a website where only the outside border of the background image is visible. It might be too busy for some website designs, but it could be a great feature for simpler sites. For example, there are background patterns that blend multi-colored swirls together (i.e., blues, purples, reds, yellows, and oranges). Gradient background images aren’t limited to one or two colors. Instead, it undulates in a way that adds movement to the appearance of a website. It doesn’t follow one of the three main gradient types. There are also backgrounds with blurred gradients, that stick to different hues in the same general color. One great thing about radial gradients for website background textures is that you can focus the important elements of your page in the middle where the gradient is less busy. Lighter hues are in the middle, and fade out to warm reds and cool blues with a warm peach in the middle. Like anything else in design, website background trends change over time. It’s possible the best website background image size might be different for your site depending on how it was designed, but 1920×1080 pixels is generally the safest best for a background image. How Big Should a Website Background Image Be?Īccording to, the ideal website background size is 1920×1080 pixels with a ratio of 16:9 and a DPI of at least 72. Website background colors that are darker or brighter could distract too much from the elements of your site that matter. Generally, a lighter background color will showcase the images, text, and graphics that should be the focal point of your website. ![]() That’s because you want your background to complement the most important features of your page including text, calls-to-action, and other images. While the best background color for a website depends on the overall esthetic and existing color scheme, neutral, light-colored backgrounds are generally appealing for most websites. ![]() What Is a Good Background Color for a Website? But somehow, teatoxes have slid through the cracks. We know that shame marketing - the kind that makes you loathe the thighs you were born with - is unhealthy and should be ignored. So why do we persist with these gimmicks - often against medical advice - when we know crash dieting doesn't work? We know that carefully marketed "diet teas" and detoxes are scams in pretty packaging. ![]() ![]() "The aesthetic that detox tea companies spout - inspired by Instagram's #fistpo and #wanderlust culture - is incredibly enticing." ( Instagram: women grow up watching other women in their lives buy expensive quick-fixes, shed the kilos, and then put it all back on again. Dieting is something of a generational tradition - your grandmother probably tried to cut out carbs, you watched your mother crave sugar on the Atkins diet and your older sister once bought and suffered through a month's worth of meal replacement shakes. Of course, fad diets have been around forever. Now, hundreds of thousands of young women follow skinny tea brands on social media with hopes of shedding "extra kilos" and looking like the tanned, toned Instagram models recruited to promote them. The teatox trend took off in Australia a few years back, when local diet tea companies began emulating similar American products. Tea detoxes, or 'teatoxes', are so-called "therapeutic" detox tea products that claim to help users shed kilos fast and get "the bikini body you've always dreamed of". But while most fad diets are forgotten quickly, there's one that just won't go away. Summer is hunting season for "health" companies, and an opportunity to up the ante on marketing their fad diets. It's difficult at any time of the year, but particularly during summer, for young women to scroll through Facebook or Instagram and not encounter advertisements bleating about #tanlines, #bodygoals and the need to #detox. "Summer is here in Australia, babes, and you know what that means … it's teatox time." 'Fitspo' images are used frequently by detox tea companies to promote their products. ![]() ![]() ![]() The platypus also dines on water bugs, water beetles, and larval damselflies, dragonflies, dobsonflies, midges, craneflies and blackflies. Although several studies have concluded that larval mayflies and caddisflies are particularly important dietary items, this may largely reflect the wide availability of these groups at the sites where the studies were conducted. The platypus typically has a varied diet dominated by bottom-dwelling (or “benthic”) insects (as shown below). Photos courtesy of APC (above) and Ann Killeen (below) The use of data loggers has confirmed that platypus feed mainly but by no means exclusively at night, with around 25% of the animals tracked along a small Victorian stream and 40% of those tracked in a Tasmanian lake often recorded to be active during daylight hours. At Lake Lea in Tasmania (which has a maximum depth of more than 10 metres), 98% of platypus dives did not exceed 3 metres, though one dive descended to nearly 9 metres. ![]() ![]() A study conducted along the Manning River in New South Wales (which has a maximum depth of about 8 metres) found that about 80% of platypus foraging dives reached a depth of 1.6-4.9 metres, with the deepest descending to 6.1 metres. Instead, inedible material is probably routinely expelled (along with surplus water) through grooves located along the edge of the lower jaw (as shown at left).Īn insulating air layer trapped in the platypus’s fur helps to provide positive buoyancy, increasing the amount of energy needed to dive deeply. In particular, there’s no reason to believe that gritty sediment is retained on purpose to help grind up prey. It returns to the surface as its oxygen supply becomes depleted (usually within 30-60 seconds of when it dived, though unforced dives of up to 138 seconds have been recorded) and then typically spends 10-20 seconds chewing and swallowing its food before diving again.Īlthough platypus cheek pouches sometimes hold minor amounts of mud or sand, such material is presumably ingested by accident. The platypus doesn’t swallow food immediately, instead storing its prey in special cheek pouches located at the back of the jaw. The animal swims to the bottom and uses its bill to find and seize prey. Platypus foraging behaviour in a pool begins with an animal doing a neat, quiet duck dive (as shown above). Animals most commonly feed for one extended session in each 24-hour period, typically remaining active for 8-16 (though occasionally up to 30) hours and completing up to 1600 foraging dives per session. They find their small invertebrate prey by searching along shallow riffles, gleaning items from submerged logs and branches, digging under banks, and diving repeatedly to the bottom of pools.
